Welcome to Copper Rose Creatives!
My name is Kayla. I’m a curvy, introverted at home mom with ADHD, anxiety, 2 introverted kids and a reasonably independent husband. Is it a privilege to be at home all the time? Absolutely! Is it exhausting trying to live up to what you were taught an at home mom should be when all you want to do is be a potato? Also, yes.
I’ve always been a creative person. As a kid, I would go on adventures in cardboard boxes or make navigation equipment for my bed (I imagined it was a ship.) With some cardboard, duct tape and a hot glue gun, anything was possible! I realized as I got older that I wasn’t fully myself if I wasn’t creating something. It didn’t matter what it was. I’ve made clothes, written stories, built furniture, embroidered, crocheted and taught myself how to design vector art. If I don't have a project, I go kind of crazy.
When I became a mom, I convinced myself that I could focus only on the kids and house chores because any hobby or craft that made me happy wouldn’t make the family money so there wasn’t any point. It took LOTS of therapy for me to understand that things don’t have to have a monetary value to be important and necessary for a person’s wellbeing. With my newfound knowledge, I decided to tackle the one artistic outlet that I’d felt unworthy to pursue. Drawing.
I created a lesson plan for myself based on my favorite YouTube channels and artists that inspire me. The Draw Classes by Drawfee are a gold mine and Toby Sketch Loose was my gateway into the amazing and imperfect world of urban sketching and Ink and Wash art.
I like drawing my people curvy and my buildings wobbly. I am inspired by old school hand drawn animation and architectural drawings. My favorite artist is Mary Blair. My preferred art supplies are fountain pens and watercolors, but I like to throw in a little digital painting when I'm feeling frisky!
As with everything, my art journey will always be growing and changing but Copper Rose Creatives is where I plan to keep track of my growth and share what I've learned.
Thanks for stopping by!
